Information About Sealants

A sealant is a thin plastic coating material that is applied to teeth that have deep grooves to help reduce development of a cavity in them.

  • Usually applied children at about 6 years old when they get their first permanent molars, and at 12 year old when they get their second permanent molars.

  • Sealants can also be applied to any adult or baby tooth that has deep grooves to prevent surface tooth decay.

  • Sealants have to be checked regularly for chipping and cracks.
