Your preventive cleaning appointment will start with an exam, which will determine if your gums are healthy enough for a regular cleaning. Part of the exam process is having dental x-rays taken. Our office uses digital x-rays which significantly reduce radiation and produce sharper images which allow for earlier detection of infections and cavities. If your teeth and gums are healthy we will perform a regular cleaning, which includes complete removal of plaque and calculus, polishing, and oral hygiene instruction. We offer fluoride treatment for both children and adults. In many cases a fluoride treatment can help get rid of annoying sensitivity.
A sealant is a thin plastic coating material that is applied to teeth that have deep grooves to help reduce development of a cavity in them. Usually applied children at about 6 years old when they get their first permanent molars, and at 12 year old when they get their second permanent molars. Sealants can also be applied to any adult or baby tooth that has deep grooves to prevent surface tooth decay. Sealants have to be checked regularly for chipping and cracks.
